Not Just Green … Squeaky Green!

2415214308_6877f5bfb3_m_2 Congratulations – it’s a … book!  It’s our first one, and we’re so proud.  We’ve named it Squeaky Green: The method Guide to Detoxing Your Home.  (Kind of a mouthful, we know. We hope it doesn’t get teased too much on the playground.)  In a nutshell, it’s a room-by-room guide to lots of easy things you can do to rid your home of toxins so you and your family will breathe easier.

In celebration of Earth Day, here are five easy and inexpensive tips – all pulled from our very own Squeaky Green.

1. Exercise that green thumb by picking up a plant, or five.  Plants are nature’s detoxers and can actually boost oxygen levels in your home.  Some real botanical champs are philodendrons, green spider plants, dracaenas, palms, ferns, English ivy, peace lilies, mums and daisies.

2. Slay the energy vampire.  OK, we know you don’t want to come home every day and reset the time on all your appliances.  Neither do we.  But for those times you’re leaving for a while, plug everything into a power strip and simply switch it off.  (Er, you might want to make sure you haven’t lost the manual for your DVD player.)

3. Open a window.  (Seriously, that’s it.)  The way our houses are built today, the air inside is usually more polluted than outside.  Open that window and breathe easier.

4. Change your furnace and air conditioning filters.  Oh, so sexy, we know.  But the seasons they are a-changin’, and we’d be willing to bet you haven’t done it for a while (every three months is a good rule of thumb).  Really pressed for time?  Turn the vacuum on it.

5. Play outside!  Whether it’s 18 degrees or 80, get out there and kick up your heels for a few minutes at least.  And for goodness sake, take someone with you.

Squeaky Green is now available at Target, Barnes & Noble, Borders and lots of other places, and you can also order it from our web site.  It makes a great gift for Earth Day – but then, we think every day is Earth Day.

Hey - I just finished the book...it's great! Just wanted to give you the props you deserve. :)

I got the book on Saturday and it's great! I'm the manager of a book store and I've already ordered several copies for my store. As soon as we receive it, I'll be placing "squeaky green" on my "staff picks" endcap. Thanks for all the 100% good stuff you do!

I received the book last week and love it! It's honestly kind of depressing when you see in such clear terms how toxic the products in our environment are, but hopeful in that there are so many simple ways to improve.

I use your products and just love them. I only wish that more stores would carry them, because I have to go to a couple of stores because one store will only carry a couple of products, so I have to go searching for another store. I think it would be nice if one store would carry the whole product line. Thank you.

I would love to review your book, Squeaky GReen, on my website. IF you agree, please send it to:

Many thanx.

This book is amazing! Thank you thank you thank you! I never knew the amounts of CRAP that are in the things I use everyday. It makes me sick to even think about it.

As a Method advocate, I have to say that I love getting previews of the new products. I have been looking over the new Squeaky Green book and I love it. The only thing I would like to make note of is on page 39 of the book. You are addressing the very real issue of air ionizers/cleaners having ozone as a bi-product. This is a very dangerous issue. However, there is a very safe solution. I am actually a consultant for a company called Nikken. We have a unit named the Air Wellness Power5. It uses a patent pending process that not only cleans the air from particles down to .003 microns, but also puts soothing negative ions back into the air without producing ozone as a bi-product. We are one of the few companies that do this. For those who have a real need for an air cleaner, this is one that you can be sure is safe from a company, like Method, with integrity. Feel free to take a look at www.mynikken.net/edensgift under the Discover It tab.

I just finished reading your book. Kudos to you! It was very informative! I have already begun to follow the advice in your book and I am passing it along to friends and family! I really love your line of non-toxic products! The scents are awesome!

I just received your book and read it cover to cover. GREAT JOB!! It was very informative and filled with awesome tips that I was excited to put into action. Beyond having amazing products, you are also teaching a lifestyle of being green. Thank you so much for giving back and helping me clean up my lifestyle. I will be passing this read on to friends and family and I wanted to say THANK YOU, THANK YOU for all you do!

WOOOOW this really did help, the hand soap is wonderful, and you give out really inspiring tips on your website. In fact, I will get my mom a kit for mother's day. Thanks alot and keep making our world a better place!!~!!!

I'm really glad that Method came out with a book like this, I plan on checking it out.

But, one thing has been bugging me for awhile. The second tip they list is "Slay Energy Vampires". This is a great thing to do, but why would an environmentally-conscious company like method that promotes sustainability create an energy vampire product such as the Aroma Pill??

Ever since I saw that product released it has been bugging me. there is no need for plug-in air scenters (aka "fresheners")! and I would think that method is well above just making better mimics of other products, such as the Glad Plug-In.

I picked up the Aroma Ring in lavender lemongrass for the bathroom awhile ago. It's been almost 2 months now I think and the disk is just starting to dry out. It works and smells great. I'm going to try some of the other (limited edition!) scents and also the Aroma Sticks next.

there is NO need for a plug-in air scenter, passive devices work just great. so why method, did you make the Aroma Pill?

(as an aside, re the air cleaners that produce ozone. this is an especially bad combination if you use air fresheners or other heavily scented products in your home. the combination of ozone plus the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that produce the aroma from the cleansers and air fresheners will react in your home to essentially produce "smog". this is a combination of various (often toxic) gases and fine particles. the same happens in "nature" when pinene and other biogenic VOCs from say pine trees react with ozone to create the haze often seen over some of the large national forests.
i'm an atmospheric chemist in case you're wondering where all this is coming from . . . => )

I have looked everywhere for your dish cubes and can't find them. I read a review that said they were the best! I have other products and love them, I have asked in the store why they don't carry more of your line. When are you coming to Chicago?

Recently my son spilled some milk on the carpet in the car. The smell was awful! I searched the web and tried different solutions for something GREEN! (carpet cleaners are horrible) and found this blog post to be helpful -- http://how.best-free-information.com/2008/05/how-to-get-rid-of-sour-milk-smell-in-auto-carpets/

why is there not any refill items for the surface cleaners like french lavender or the others for that matter? i'm trying to use less plastic & would rather refill than buy another plastic container. can't find refills for the tub & tile cleaner eucalyptus, all purpose surface cleaners etc. please consider this resolution to more plastic please. thanks from a concerned consumer

My O-Mop handle sheared off. Just two times using it and it broke off while cleaning. So I got a second one. It lasted about 3 minutes. The handle broke off in the exact same place. The plastic and or the molding process are flawed. What do I do with two broken OMops? Isn't the next one going to shear off as well? My generic Swiffferr lasted more than 8 years before the foam broke down on it.

Hey--we're big fans of your air enhancer line and were disappointed to see that it's been pulled from the market. Any plans to get it back anytime soon?

I love your products. All of them. I only wish I could find your leather wipes again. Are you still making them? Thanks.

Hey guys... Sarah, from method. As far as the Aroma Spray Air Enhancers go, you can expect these back on shelves at Target and online at Methodhome.com beginning in mid-August.

The Leather Wipes are simply going through a packaging redesign, so I would look for these in the next few months, as well.

Hope that helps, and feel free to shoot us an email at info@methodhome.com with any other questions... happy to help, as always!
